Dr. Moossa is an internationally recognized gastrointestinal and endocrine surgeon. He is an expert in complex pancreatic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and difficult reoperative surgical cases. He specializes in surgery for pancreatic cancer and has made many advances in the treatment of pancreatic carcinoma.
Dr. Moossa is a leader in developing new surgical techniques and in enhancing the safety of gastrointestinal surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
At UCSD, Dr. Moossa is Associate Dean of Health Sciences and serves as Special Counsel to the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences. He is also Director of Tertiary and Quaternary Referral Services, leading UCSD’s efforts to deliver care to patients who have even the most rare or complicated health problems. From 1983 to 2003, he served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UCSD.
Dr. Moossa participates in the Translational Oncology Program at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. His recent research efforts have included the development of laboratory models that can be used to test new cancer therapies, surgical techniques for pancreatectomy for cancer that has metastasized to the pancreas, and updated approaches to the diagnosis and staging of pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Moossa has authored more than 300 scientific papers and medical book chapters. He is the editor/co-editor of many surgical textbooks including the widely read Comprehensive Textbook of Oncology and Essential Surgical Practice.
Dr. Moossa speaks fluently and writes in both English and French.
